Phases of Classical Development

The classical program advances through three overlapping phases that shape both horse and rider:

Familiarization, where the horse is introduced to tack, the rider’s weight, and early rhythm and relaxation.[9]

Development of thrust, where impulsion, transitions, and early lateral work begin to strengthen the hindquarters and refine communication.

Development of carrying power, where collection grows naturally from alignment, strength, and emotional balance.[10]

Familiarization asks for patience and calm observation. It requires the human to notice subtle signs of tension and seek relaxation rather than compliance.[11]

Developing thrust requires inviting energy without anxiety, maintaining a steady nervous system, and honoring the horse’s need for psychological safety.[12]

Developing carrying power asks for responsibility and discernment, because the increased strength and collection can only emerge if welfare and emotional ease are preserved.[13] [ISES_Train…n Pictures | PDF][ISES Princ…oster-2017 | PDF] , [ISES 2017…roceedings | PDF]
